How to Choose a Pole or Aerial Studio in the Hudson Valley

August 3, 2026 7 min read

There are several pole and aerial studios in the Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey. Here's an honest framework for picking the one that fits you.

If you are shopping for a pole or aerial studio in the Hudson Valley or just over the border in northern New Jersey, you have real choices — and that is a good thing. Studios in this region include Flexibility in Flight in Chester, NY, along with others you may come across such as The Body Art Barn, Casa Pole Dance, Studio No. 7, and Innovated Vibe Pole Studio. Each has its own focus, schedule, and personality. This guide is the framework we would use ourselves, and we would genuinely rather you find the right fit than sign up somewhere that doesn't suit you.

1. Which apparatus do they actually teach?

Some studios specialize in pole only. Others focus on a single aerial apparatus. If you already know you want pole, a pole-focused studio is great. If you are not sure yet — or you suspect you'll want to try silks, lyra, hammock and pole before committing — look for a studio that teaches all of them under one roof so you can switch without changing memberships.

  • Pole fitness and pole dance
  • Aerial silks (also called aerial tissue)
  • Lyra / aerial hoop
  • Aerial yoga / hammock
  • Aerial rope (corde lisse)
  • Flexibility, conditioning, and dance styles like heels or bellydance

Flexibility in Flight teaches all of the above plus circus flow arts like hula hoop dance, which is unusual for a studio this size in Orange County.

2. How big are the classes?

Class size is the single biggest predictor of how fast you progress and how safe you feel. Aerial in particular needs eyes on you — a spot at the right moment, a correction before a bad habit sets in. Ask any studio how many students share an instructor and how many apparatus points are rigged. We cap our classes deliberately so nobody spends the hour waiting in line for a silk.

3. What does a first class actually cost?

Compare intro offers, not just drop-in rates — most studios price a first visit differently from ongoing classes. Ask whether packages expire, whether you're locked into a membership, and what a make-up policy looks like when life happens. Our New Student Special is 5 classes for $76, usable within 90 days across any beginner-friendly class, with no membership required.

4. Is the vibe right for you?

Pole and aerial studios sit on a spectrum from athletic and technique-driven to sensual and performance-driven, with plenty in between. Neither is better — but one of them is better for you. Read a studio's own descriptions of its classes and look at who appears in its photos and videos. If you feel like you'd fit in the room, you probably will.

5. Practical logistics that decide whether you keep going

  • Drive time — under 25 minutes is the realistic threshold for a weekly habit
  • Class times that match your work and family schedule
  • Parking and building access after dark
  • Whether kids, teens, and adults are all served if your family wants in
  • Whether they host parties, privates, and workshops when you want something special

Questions to ask before you book anywhere

  1. How many students are in a beginner class, and how many instructors?
  2. What is the intro offer, and when does it expire?
  3. Do I need any strength or flexibility to start?
  4. What should I wear, and what do you provide?
  5. What's the cancellation and make-up policy?
  6. Are your instructors certified, and in what?

Where Flexibility in Flight fits

We are a boutique studio at 16 Main Street in downtown Chester, NY, roughly 10–25 minutes from Goshen, Warwick, Monroe, Florida, Middletown, and Sugar Loaf, and about 25–35 minutes from Vernon and Sussex, NJ. We teach the full range of aerial and pole disciplines, keep classes small, welcome total beginners and kids from age 5, and host birthday and bachelorette parties. If that sounds like your kind of room, come try it on the New Student Special. If another studio fits you better, we'd rather you fly somewhere than not fly at all.
