Flow Arts & Hula Hoop Dance: Find Your Rhythm Every Thursday

August 1, 2026 6 min read

Hula hoop dance is a playful, low-impact flow art that builds coordination, cardio, and creativity. Join us every Thursday at 8 PM in Chester, NY.

Flow arts sit at the intersection of dance, circus, and meditation. At its simplest, a flow art is any movement practice where an object — a hoop, poi, staff, or fans — becomes an extension of your body. Hula hoop dance is one of the most accessible entry points: the hoop is light, inexpensive, and forgiving, and the learning curve is steep enough to keep you challenged but gentle enough for total beginners. At Flexibility in Flight, we celebrate hula hoop dance as part of our Circus Flow Arts offering, with a dedicated class every Thursday at 8 PM in Chester, NY.

What is hula hoop dance, really?

Hula hoop dance is not the playground hooping you remember from recess. Modern dance hoops are larger, heavier, and weighted differently than toy store hoops, which makes them slower and easier to control around the body. The practice blends on-body moves — waist, chest, shoulder, and knee hooping — with off-body tricks where the hoop spins in the hands, rolls along the arms, or floats through the air in a toss. Over time, students link these moves into sequences, find their own rhythm, and develop a personal style that looks and feels like dancing.

Why flow arts are worth exploring

Flow arts offer a rare combination of physical and mental benefits. The cardio is real — a focused hoop session can get your heart rate up without the impact of running. The coordination demands grow as you do, so your brain stays engaged. Many students describe the mental state as a flow state: your attention is fully absorbed, the outside world fades, and the movement becomes its own reward. That mindfulness quality is one reason flow arts are popular in circus communities, festivals, and wellness spaces alike.

  • Low-impact cardio that is easy on the joints
  • Improved balance, coordination, and spatial awareness
  • Core and shoulder stability from controlling the hoop
  • Creative expression and stress relief through movement
  • A welcoming, non-competitive class environment

What happens in a Thursday 8 PM class

Our hula hoop dance class runs every Thursday at 8 PM and is structured as a Circus Flow Arts offering. Each session starts with a short warm-up to wake up the shoulders, spine, and wrists. We then break down foundational moves — waist hooping, hand spins, passing, and basic transitions — before layering them into a short sequence set to music. The last portion of class is open flow: students play with their own combinations, ask questions, and get one-on-one coaching. Whether you are brand new or already have a few moves, the class is designed to meet you where you are.

  1. Warm-up and mobility for shoulders, wrists, and spine
  2. Foundational on-body hooping: waist, chest, and shoulders
  3. Off-body technique: hand spins, passes, and simple tosses
  4. A short choreographed sequence to tie moves together
  5. Open flow and individual coaching in the final minutes

What to wear and bring

Comfort is the priority. Wear fitted clothing that won't tangle in the hoop and shoes that let you move on the floor — sneakers, socks, or bare feet all work. Avoid long dangly jewelry or loose scarves. The studio provides a range of dance hoops, but you are welcome to bring your own if you have one. Water is recommended; the class is more of a workout than it looks.

  • Fitted top and leggings or shorts that won't catch the hoop
  • Sneakers, socks, or bare feet — whatever feels secure on the floor
  • Hair tied back and away from the face
  • Water bottle and a small towel
  • Your own hoop optional; studio hoops are provided

Who is this class for?

Everyone. You do not need rhythm, dance training, or a background in circus. Beginners are welcome, and students who have never managed to keep a hoop up are exactly who we love to teach. If you have poi, staff, or other flow arts experience, the class is also a great space to cross-train and pick up a new prop. The vibe is playful, judgment-free, and focused on progress over perfection.

Hoop dance as part of Circus Flow Arts

At Flexibility in Flight, hula hoop dance is one pillar of a broader Circus Flow Arts program. We see flow arts as the connective tissue between our aerial and dance disciplines: the same body awareness, musicality, and confidence built in hoop class transfers to silks, lyra, pole, and heels. For students curious about circus but not ready to leave the ground, the hoop is the perfect first step. For aerialists, it adds coordination, creativity, and ground-based movement to a vertical training routine.

The hoop doesn't spin around you; it spins with you. Once you feel that, the rest is just practice.
